The Light and the Vessel

Before anything existed there was only the Light, whose nature is to share. To have someone to share with, it created the Vessel – and the Vessel is us.

Every Kabbalistic idea grows from one story about the beginning of everything, before time and space.

In the beginning there was only the Light. Kabbalists call it the Light of the Creator, or the Endless (Ein Sof). The Light is not a lamp or a glow. It is the name for every kind of fulfillment there is – love, joy, wisdom, peace, abundance, life itself. And the nature of the Light is to share. Endlessly.

Why a Vessel?

To share, you need someone to share with. So the Light created a Vessel: an infinite desire to receive. The Vessel was made to receive everything the Light had to give, and at first it did. It was filled completely. There was no lack, no pain, no distance.

In Rav Berg's teaching, that Vessel is the source of every soul. Each of us is a piece of it. That is why you want things – constantly, from the moment you wake up. Desire is not a flaw. It is your original nature. You were designed to receive.

Two kinds of wanting

Here is where the story turns. Kabbalah distinguishes between two ways of receiving. The first is the Desire to Receive for the Self Alone – taking, grabbing, needing, with no thought beyond yourself. The second is the Desire to Receive for the Sake of Sharing – wanting things so that you can pass the fulfillment on.

The first kind feels good briefly and then leaves you emptier. The second connects you to the Light's own nature, and that connection is what lasts. The whole of spiritual work, in this view, is the slow transformation of the first kind of wanting into the second.

Why it matters on a Tuesday

This isn't just cosmology. It explains why the promotion, the purchase or the new relationship never quite satisfies for long – and why an act of generosity can leave you feeling fuller than you were before. When you share, you are briefly acting like the Light, and you feel it.
