Reactive vs. Proactive

Every reaction is a moment where something outside you pulls your strings. Every proactive choice is a moment where you become the cause.

If Rav Berg's teaching had a single daily instruction, it would be this: stop being reactive.

A reaction is any automatic response driven by an outside trigger. Someone insults you and you snap back. Your phone buzzes and you grab it. A craving arrives and you obey. In each case, something outside you is the cause and you are the effect – a robot running a program.

Why reactions block the Light

Remember the Vessel that wanted to be a cause, not just a receiver. Reactive behavior is the opposite of that wish. When you react, you're purely receiving – being pushed around by circumstances and by your own ego. Rav Berg taught that each reaction creates distance between you and the Light, and that distance is felt as chaos: stress, conflict, emptiness.

Proactive behavior is choosing your response instead of letting the trigger choose it for you. It's the moment you feel the anger rising and don't send the email. It's saying something kind to the colleague who annoys you. It's pausing.

Reactions aren't the enemy – they're the signal

This isn't about suppressing feelings or pretending to be calm. You'll still feel the flash of anger or fear. That flash is useful: it tells you exactly where your growth is waiting. In this view, the people and situations that trigger you most are your most valuable teachers.

The proactive formula

A simple version of the method Rav Berg taught goes like this:

  1. An obstacle appears.
  2. Recognize the reactive impulse – that's your ego, not you.
  3. Pause and shut the reaction down.
  4. Let the Light in. Act from your higher self instead.

Every time you complete this loop, the teaching says, you earn a little more Light – and slowly, you become someone who causes their life instead of suffering it.
