If the Light is infinite and our world is finite, how do they connect? Kabbalah answers with the ten Sefirot – ten stages or "dimensions" through which the Light steps down until it reaches physical reality. Arranged together, they form the famous diagram called the Tree of Life.
A helpful modern comparison is the transformers on a power line. The raw current from the power station would burn out your toaster; the transformers reduce it step by step to a level your home can use. The Sefirot do the same for the Light.
The ten, from top to bottom
- Keter (Crown) – the highest point, pure potential, closest to the Endless.
- Chochmah (Wisdom) – the first flash of an idea, before it has any detail.
- Binah (Understanding) – where the flash is developed and given form.
- Chesed (Mercy) – expansive, unconditional giving.
- Gevurah (Judgment) – strength, discipline and limits.
- Tiferet (Beauty) – balance and harmony between giving and limiting.
- Netzach (Victory) – endurance and drive.
- Hod (Glory) – receptivity, reflection and surrender.
- Yesod (Foundation) – the funnel that gathers everything above and passes it on.
- Malchut (Kingdom) – our physical world, where the Light finally manifests.
Three columns
The Tree has three columns. The right is the sharing side (led by Chesed), the left is the receiving or restricting side (led by Gevurah), and the center balances them (Tiferet, Yesod). Too much sharing without limits burns out; too much restriction goes cold. Kabbalah's practical lesson from the diagram is balance – what Rav Berg called living in the central column.
Upper and lower
Rav Berg's school groups the ten into three parts: the upper three (Keter, Chochmah, Binah), which remain beyond our direct reach; the six in the middle (Chesed through Yesod), together called Zeir Anpin, the "small face," which this school sometimes compares to the upper world that feeds ours; and Malchut, our world. Every act of Restriction, the teaching says, opens the channel from Zeir Anpin down into Malchut.
